Pool Swim Venue
The Clennon Valley Sports Centre has a 33 metre indoor pool. This can be made available for private use by Training Camps, or lanes can be created during public times for more informal swim training sessions
Openwater – Sea Swimming Venues
Torbay offers a huge variety of openwater swimming opportunities from its beaches and rocky bays. It has five “Blue Flag beaches and any of these can be set up with a 750 or 1500 metre buoyed course for use as a training venue. Venues can be then selected by the Training Camp depending on current tide and water conditions.
Oddicombe Beach is the favoured venue as this is sheltered from the prevailing south west winds and will provide smooth or lightly choppy conditions similar to those expected in the Docklands.
In addition to beach swimming venues Torbay has a number of small coves along the rocky promontories which offer sheltered openwater swim venues.
All sea swimming venues can be manned by local lifeguards and/or RNLI either in inshore RIB inflatables, rescue boards or canoes.
Openwater – Freshwater Swimming Venues
There are a number of freshwater swimming venues which can provide race-specific conditions similar to those expected in the London Docklands. All can have 750 or 1500 metre courses marked out and pontoons constructed for start practice. Safety boats/canoes can be available at all training periods.
Wimbleball Reservoir
Situated near Dulverton within the Exmoor National Park, Wimbleball reservoir is a 1? hour drive from Torbay. The lake is the location for of the Ironman 70.3 event and so has facilities and staff that are aware of the requirements of competitive triathletes.
Roadford Reservoir
This is the largest reservoir in the South West. It lies between Okehampton and Launceston, about 1? hours drive North West of Torbay. The Visitor Centre has facilities which can be made available for a Triathlete Training Camp.
Hennock Reservoirs
Three small reservoirs on the eastern edge of the Dartmoor National Park about a ? hour drive from Torbay. Their peaceful location and natural beauty would make them an invaluable venue for a Training Camp.
